The Cold Stares are a blues-rock power trio hailing from Evansville, Indiana, originally formed in 2009 by guitarist/vocalist Chris Tapp and drummer Brian Mullins. Rooted in their Western Kentucky upbringing, the duo cultivated a raw, minimalist sound characterized by gritty guitar riffs and soulful storytelling. Their early work, including albums like A Cold Wet Night and a Howling Wind (2014) and Head Bent (2017), garnered critical acclaim and featured in various media, such as a Dodge commercial and TNT's Animal Kingdom. In 2022, the band expanded their sonic depth by adding bassist Bryce Klueh, transitioning into a classic power trio and releasing the album Voices in 2023, which was praised for its mature and eclectic sound.
The Cold Stares' music seamlessly blends elements of blues, southern rock, and hard rock, drawing comparisons to legends like Led Zeppelin and Cream. Their 2024 album, The Southern, delves into themes of family, tradition, and Southern heritage, reflecting their deep roots and personal experiences. Known for their explosive live performances, the band has toured extensively across the US and Europe, sharing stages with acts like Joe Bonamassa, Rival Sons, and Larkin Poe. Their track "Mojo Hand" gained significant attention as the trailer song for the video game Cyberpunk 2077, amassing over 10 million streams on YouTube.
