BIOGRAPHY
Gary U.S. Bonds burst onto the music scene in 1960 with his hit “New Orleans,” bringing infectious energy to a generation hungry for real rock and roll. Born Gary Anderson in Norfolk, Virginia, he adopted his stage name after promotional records were sent to radio stations labeled “Buy U.S. Bonds.” His follow-up single, “Quarter to Three,” became a number one hit and a rock classic later recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.” Over the next several years, Bonds recorded a string of good-time hits including “School is Out,” “Dear Lady Twist,” and “Twist, Twist Senora,” and even headlined above The Beatles on a 1963 European tour. Decades later, his music inspired Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt, leading to a collaboration that produced the acclaimed albums Dedication and On the Line with hits such as “This Little Girl Is Mine” and “Out of Work.” Bonds earned a GRAMMY nomination in 1982 and continued to record and perform, including his award-winning 2004 album Back in 20. Beyond his own success, he earned recognition as a songwriter with a Country Music Association nomination for Johnny Paycheck’s hit “Friend Don’t Take Her, She’s All I’ve Got.” A true icon whose career has spanned generations, Gary U.S. Bonds continues to perform with his band, the Roadhouse Rockers, delivering the same soulful energy and party spirit that first made him a rock and roll legend.
