About the Artist
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Miami and raised in New Orleans, Chris Smither was inspired by blues greats like Lightnin’ Hopkins and developed a signature foot-tapping, fingerpicking style that has defined his six-decade career. After leaving college for Boston’s 1960s folk scene, he befriended Bonnie Raitt, who later recorded his songs “Love You Like a Man” and “I Feel the Same.” His early albums on Poppy Records, including I’m a Stranger, Too! and Don’t It Drag On, earned critical acclaim, followed by a string of celebrated releases through the ’90s and beyond. Smither’s music—rooted in blues, folk, and Americana—has led to collaborations with icons like B.B. King, Emmylou Harris, and Allen Toussaint, and his songs have appeared in films and been covered by artists from Diana Krall to Tim O’Brien. Now over 20 albums deep, including his latest All About the Bones (2024), Smither remains one of America’s most respected and poetic acoustic voices, blending masterful guitar work with soulful reflections on life, love, and time.
